Liam Neeson Calls For Stricter U.S. Gun Laws & Talks Graveyards & Bono

Liam Neeson is urging the U.S. government to pass stricter gun laws to prevent school massacres, such as the kind we have become all too familiar with. In an interview with the British magazine Radar, Liam called U.S. gun laws “crazy.” He spoke about the matter in more detail with the British newspaper the Independent.

“I am totally for gun control in the U.S.,” Neeson told Radar. “The population of America is roughly 300 million and there are 300 million guns in this country, which is terrifying. Every day we’re seeing some kid running rampant in a school. And do you know what the gun lobby’s response to Newtown was? The National Rifle Association’s official response was, ‘If that teacher had been armed…’ It’s crazy. I’ll give Britain its dues, when they had the Dunblane massacre in Scotland, within 24 hours the gun laws were changed so you could not have a handgun… It is the right to bear arms, which is the problem. I think if the Founding Fathers knew what was happening they would be turning in their graves with embarrassment at how the law has been interpreted.”

Neeson is speaking out about gun control after appearing in many films where his characters use guns for violent means. His most recent films, which include Non-StopA Million Ways to Die In the West and A Walk Among the Tombstones all feature his characters using guns.

Born in Ireland, Neeson is a New York resident and became a U.S. citizen five years ago.

In addition to discussung guns, Neeson spoke about his friendship with U2 lead singer Bono. “We chat, or with him a lot of the time I just listen,” Neeson said. “He’s a wonderful man. He’s got an idea for a script which we’ve been working on for the past six years.” Neeson describes the film plot as being inspired by the Irish show band phenomenon of the 1970s.

“I like graveyards,” Neeson said. “I find them very peaceful. I like window shopping.”
